I'm 8o years old. I lived at 4310 Cottman Street.
Frank Chiriaka and his family lived two blocks west of us on Cottman Street. Jack Mc Donald was our assisstant Scout Master. I couldn't have been more tham 10 when I delivered circulars for the coming attractions at the Mayfair movie Theatre. For this we were given three free passes for a week to the theatre. I hung out at the Mayfair restaurant. with a bunch of other guys. We wore pegged panta and one button rolls made by Jon Dinells, a custom tailor in Kensington. The preferred foot wear at the time was Flagg brothers shoes: most poular color was cherry stain. Like most of our generation we served in WW II. I was one of 13 children, 6 girls 7 boys out of the seven boys 6 of us were in the armed services. My sisters worked in the war effort as well and married men in the service.
I have written 3 novels(available on my web site wwww.Cottage Publishers.com. One of the characters in my first novel is from Mayfair.

An excellent view of the Mayfair section during the 1930's. The film achieves the objective of making it seem that people who live in Mayfield have a better quality of life.

If you ever lived near Frankford and Cottman Aves. in Philadelphia, you need to watch this film. It's fun to see the various buildings and businesses from 1937 and try to figure out what type of thrift store they are now. My wife and I met when we both worked at the Mayfair Theatre in 1981, so it held extra meaning for us.
Overall, it's a dated, hokey chamber of commerce tour guide, but it's so dated it's cool.
*For bonus points, see if you can spot the racist comment during the trip to Pennypack.*

It is good to have these films to remind us of how life was before the big-business vandals went on their greedy rampage destroying much of the individuality.. I share the sentiments of the other reviewers. Much the same has happened in my city, a continent and thousands of miles away.

I was surprised to see this feature listed. I live in Mayfair. It is one of the last neighborhoods left in Philadelphia for the working class. What I mean is that the city is in a slow decay and seeing this feature is a reminder of how it use to be in Mayfair. The film is about the all-new-life of living in Mayfair. The folks look like there having a ball knowing they're going to be in a movie as they present the neighborhood . The Mayfair Theater is now an Eckard Drug's Store. It's amazing to see all of those old stores that exsisted on Frankford Ave. Although it still thrives, I look to see where those old stores use to be. I figured out some. If your not from Philly, check this out anyway. The neighborhood is what makes Philly what it is and I'm pround of being from Mayfair.

Part travelogue/home movie/sales pitch, this film is a GREAT snapshot of smalltown USA in the late 30's. Somewhat built around a hoary love story, the fim just showcases a LOT of businesses in the area, with many nervous salespeople looking into the camera when they arent supposed to. Also showcasing the churches and the 'schools' although no schools are actually shown. Just the students. Worth the download. Highly Reccomended!

This is such an awesome film. I must recommend it however I've shown it to people who've grown up in Mayfair/N.E.Philly yet no one showed much interest. To me it is a gem, also I recommend the same filmmaker's "It happened in Norristown", my hometown, and also the one on Levittown and Doylestown are good as well but they show a much different view of all these places where things were just getting built up and the areas hadn't reached their fine point of ghettoification like they are now, mayfair and norristown are both filthy pieces of shiite now however these videos show a much different point of view back then. QUITE Interesting
